India's Battery Energy Storage Developments: A Weekly Update
============================================================
India's battery energy storage pipeline kept moving this week. Three fresh tenders were floated across Kerala, Odisha, and Maharashtra. One significant result emerged: Maharashtra's state discom awarded 1,050 MW / 2,100 MWh of standalone storage capacity to two developers. This is the latest edition of our weekly tracker, so every item below is new. From next week onward, tenders already covered here will be skipped.
New Tenders This Week
Cochin Shipyard's 20 MWh Battery Storage Tender (Kochi, Kerala)
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), the central PSU shipbuilder, has invited bids to set up a grid-connected battery energy storage system at its premises in Kochi, Kerala. The tender covers a 20 MWh / 10 MW BESS on a turnkey basis. Bids are due by October 13, 2026.
Coal India's 80 MW/320 MWh BESS EPC Tender (Odisha)
Coal India's subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, has floated an EPC tender for an 80 MW / 320 MWh standalone BESS. This project is split across four 20 MW/80 MWh sites in Odisha: Padampur, New Bolangir, Bhatli, and Basta. The project carries a ₹50 lakh EMD and includes 15 years of O&M. It aims to help GRIDCO manage peak demand and absorb more renewable power. The NIT was issued on September 14, 2026.
GAIL's 100 MW Solar + 22 MWh BESS PMC Tender (Maharashtra)
GAIL (India) Limited has invited bids to appoint a Project Management Consultant for a 100 MW ground-mounted solar project paired with a 22 MWh BESS in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, Maharashtra. This hybrid project is intended to firm up renewable supply and improve grid flexibility at the site.
Tender Winners This Week
MSEDCL's 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh Standalone BESS Auction — Oriana Power & GK Energy
Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) awarded 1,050 MW / 2,100 MWh of its 2,000 MW / 4,000 MWh standalone BESS tender roughly a month after floating it. TrueRE Oriana Power won 900 MW / 1,800 MWh through two Letters of Award of 500 MW/1,000 MWh and 400 MW/800 MWh. The tariffs range from ₹2.38–2.40 lakh/MW/month, amounting to roughly ₹3,870 crore over 15-year Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreements. GK Energy won the remaining 150 MW / 300 MWh at ₹2.38 lakh/MW/month. Both awards draw on Viability Gap Funding and the Power System Development Fund.
The Importance of Battery Energy Storage
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play a crucial role in integrating renewable energy into the grid. They help manage the intermittent nature of renewable sources like solar and wind. By storing excess energy generated during peak production times, BESS can release it during periods of high demand. This capability enhances grid stability and reliability.
Benefits of BESS
Enhanced Grid Stability: BESS can provide frequency regulation and voltage support, ensuring a stable electricity supply.
Peak Shaving: By discharging stored energy during peak demand, BESS can reduce the need for additional generation capacity.
Integration of Renewable Energy: BESS allows for greater penetration of renewable energy sources, facilitating a transition to a cleaner energy grid.
Cost-Effectiveness: With advancements in technology, the cost of battery storage has decreased significantly, making it a viable option for energy management.
Future Outlook for Battery Energy Storage in India
As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, the demand for battery energy storage solutions will only grow. The government's push for renewable energy targets and the increasing need for grid reliability will drive investments in BESS.
Key Drivers of Growth
Government Initiatives: Policies promoting renewable energy and storage solutions will encourage investments.
Technological Advancements: Innovations in battery technology will improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Market Demand: As more renewable projects come online, the need for reliable storage solutions will increase.
In conclusion, the developments in India's battery energy storage sector are promising. With new tenders and awarded projects, we are witnessing a significant shift towards a more sustainable energy future. The integration of BESS will be vital in achieving India's renewable energy goals and ensuring a reliable power supply.
