What Is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)? A Guide for India
A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electricity in batteries and releases it when it is needed. In India, BESS is how solar power gets used after sunset, how grids handle peak demand, and how factories cut their power bills.
What does BESS stand for?
BESS stands for battery energy storage system. The term covers the batteries plus everything needed to run them safely and connect them to the grid.
How does a BESS work?
Charge: the system draws power from solar, wind or the grid when it is cheap or plentiful.
Store: battery cells hold the energy, monitored by a battery management system (BMS).
Discharge: a power conversion system (PCS) turns the stored DC power back into AC and supplies the grid or site when demand is high.
Control: an energy management system (EMS) decides when to charge and when to discharge.
What are the main parts of a BESS?
Battery cells and racks: usually LFP (lithium iron phosphate) for stationary storage
BMS: monitors each cell's voltage, temperature and state of charge
PCS (inverter): converts DC to AC and back
EMS: the control software
Thermal management and fire safety: cooling, gas detection and fire suppression
Container or enclosure: most grid-scale systems ship in 20 ft containers, like Urjapod's Pod Gen 1, a 5 MWh containerised BESS
How big is India's BESS market?
India added 8.2 GWh of BESS in the first half of 2026, up from 98.4 MWh in the first half of 2025, according to Mercom data reported by ESS News (14 September 2026). Gujarat holds about 20% of installed capacity.
Crisil expects 45–50 GWh of BESS to be commissioned across FY27 and FY28, as reported by Saur Energy (28 September 2026).
A Central Electricity Authority (CEA) draft dated 3 September 2026 would require storage at new solar and wind plants from 1 July 2027, as reported by PV Tech.
What is BESS used for in India?
Solar plus storage: shifting daytime solar output into the evening peak.
Standalone grid storage: discoms and utilities buying storage capacity through SECI, NTPC and state tenders. Follow every new tender on our weekly India BESS Tender Tracker.
Commercial and industrial (C&I) storage: factories using batteries to cut peak demand charges and time-of-day (ToD) costs. Estimate your savings with our Bill Analyser.
How much does a BESS cost in India?
Cost depends on size, duration and cell prices, and cell prices have risen through 2026. For a project-specific estimate, contact Urjapod's engineers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MW and MWh in BESS? MW is how fast the battery can deliver power. MWh is how much energy it holds. A 2 MW / 4 MWh system can run at full power for two hours.
Which battery is best for BESS? Today LFP dominates stationary storage because it is safe, long-lasting and affordable. Sodium-ion is an emerging alternative that needs no lithium or cobalt.
How long does a BESS last? Typically 10 to 15 years, depending on how many cycles it runs per day and how deeply it is discharged.
Who makes BESS in India? Several Indian companies now build containerised systems. Urjapod Energy, based in Ahmedabad, designs the Pod Gen 1 container and provides pre-bid engineering for BESS tenders. Talk to us about your project.
